Exam weighting by Skill Set
Two skill sets — Plan, Build, Maintain and Disassemble Systems (26%) and Install, Control and Disassemble Lighting (21%) — together make up nearly half the exam. Focused review there is likely to pay off disproportionately.
Two paths to the exam
- Registered apprentices sit the exam after completing (or nearing completion of) their apprenticeship. See Becoming Certified.
- Exam-challenge applicants (never formally apprenticed) may sit the exam directly if they can show 5,000 hours of on-the-job experience and competency in all mandatory skills. See Becoming Certified.
